Nicole Sidman is an attorney, a director at a local non-profit, a Democrat, and a person of faith. Her work demonstrates a commitment to justice, equality, freedom, and honesty – values she learned from her mother and family. She’s one of us.
It’s because of these values that Nicole is committed to a people-powered campaign. Instead of relying on money from corporate PACs, Nicole’s campaign has over 4,000 individual donors, and her average online contribution is $74. Nicole will protect our democracy by working for nonpartisan redistricting legislation that puts elections back in the hands of voters, not politicians.
Nicole isn’t running for office to switch parties or trick voters. Politicians like Tricia Cotham, who say one thing and then do the other, can’t be trusted to represent our best interests. Nicole will go to Raleigh and work for us – not the special interests, and not the politicians who do their bidding.
After the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade, Tricia Cotham and North Carolina Republicans passed SB 20, an abortion ban that makes it harder for women to access lifesaving healthcare. The Charlotte Observer described Cotham as the “pivotal vote to pass [new] abortion restrictions.”
Nicole will protect reproductive freedom and our right to make our own decisions on contraception and abortion. Nicole will never side with weird extremists like Mark Robinson, who are pushing to restrict access to IVF and birth control and make it harder for victims of sexual assault to have an abortion. She will fight to overturn the disastrous effects of SB 20 and will always vote to protect reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
Nicole believes it’s your body, and it should be your choice.
As a former teacher and President of her son’s elementary school PTA, Nicole will fight to restore full funding for our local public schools. She will work to reduce class size and increase teacher pay, which are the top indicators of educational achievement.
As the product of public schools and a proud two-time University of Michigan graduate, Nicole knows that public education is the key to a good future for our children and students. Over 85% of our kids go to public schools, which means if we don’t support our public schools, we fail over 8 in 10 North Carolina students.
Nicole supports a strong public education system that includes universal Pre-K, K-12 instruction, community college, libraries, HBCUs, and the nationally acclaimed University of North Carolina System. Nicole would repeal Tricia Cotham’s legislation that cut $300 million from our public schools and sent the money to exclusive, unaccountable private schools that can discriminate against families based on their religion. She would prevent Republicans from passing additional cuts to public education like House Bill 823, which are already expected to cost taxpayers over $4.4 Billion over the next 10 years… and have been described by experts as a “windfall to the rich.”
As an attorney, working mom, and former PTA President, Nicole knows the challenges of raising a family and balancing a budget. She will work to improve our schools, strengthen the economy, and make sure our state continues to be a great place to do business. She’ll fight to hold businesses accountable for price gouging and protect us from unfair price increases and inflation.
Nicole opposes radical culture war legislation that drives investment and opportunity away from North Carolina. Instead, she’ll focus on economic development, job training, career and technical education, and creating an environment where leading companies want to do business and create jobs.
As the daughter of a working mom and a working mother herself, Nicole also supports access to childcare and medical and family leave protections that allow women to participate in the workforce and advance their careers as they see fit.
As a Gun Sense Candidate, Nicole will work to keep our community safe and work for common sense gun laws like background checks, to prevent criminals, domestic abusers, and sexual predators from getting deadly weapons. Nicole opposes Lt. Governor Mark Robinson’s plans to eliminate all background checks, including for potential buyers of assault weapons.
When Nicole’s opponent, Tricia Cotham, was faced with a vote to eliminate background checks on handgun sales, she didn’t even show up – allowing the legislation to pass and making our streets less safe. Because of her weak record, the local Fraternal Order of Police declined to endorse Cotham’s reelection.
90 percent of Americans support universal background checks on every gun sale. Nicole believes parents and families should be able to pass reasonable restrictions on guns that reduce crime and protect law enforcement, while still protecting our Second Amendment right to bear arms. This includes Red Flag Laws or “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” that allow law enforcement and family members to petition the court for a temporary seizure of firearms from individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, and funding for community-based gun violence prevention groups.
